Maharashtra health and technology common entrance test: Students find physics tough

PUNE: Students appearing for the Maharashtra health and technology common entrance test (MHT-CET) on Thursday said the physics paper was tough, but, overall, the difficulty level was similar to that of the last three years.

Nearly 36,000 students appeared for the test in 77 exam centres, which qualifies them for professional courses in health sciences, pharmacy and engineering in the state.

Students aspiring for health science courses, appeared for physics, chemistry and biology papers; while engineering aspirants appeared for physics, chemistry and mathematics papers. Students also had the option of writing all the four papers to be eligible for both engineering and health science courses.

Sushmita Swami, a student of Jain Kanya Prashala, Chinchwad, said, "The physics paper was tougher than usual. The numerical questions in part I of the paper were lengthy and a bit confusing." Biology and chemistry papers posed no problems, but the calculus portion of mathematics paper was a little tricky as well, she added.

Many other students echoed Sushmita's reaction regarding the difficulty level of the physics paper. Ishita Ghosh, who hails from Durgapur, West Bengal, and was in the city to appear for the test, said, besides being tough, the physics paper was lengthy as well.

"One-and-a-half-hours was too less to complete the physics paper. The chemistry paper was also lengthy," she added.

Vivek Patil, who appeared for physics, chemistry and mathematics papers, said barring physics, the rest of the question paper was easy. "Some problems in wave theory were difficult. I felt part II of the physics paper was toughest in this year's test," he added. Kandan Saswade, who appeared for all the subjects, however, did not think that the physics paper was the toughest of the four. "Personally, I felt mathematics to be the toughest paper," he added

Avengers: Hulk shifts spotlight on 'Calcutta' squalor

New Delhi: In the squalor of night time Kolkata, mild mannered doctor Bruce Banner tends to the ill and tries to atone for a past that is as dark and spotted as the walls of the shanties he visits. He thinks he can control the monster that is lurking inside him but he can never be absolutely sure.

Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk is shown hiding out in what is supposedly a slum in erstwhile Calcutta in what is now seen as the season's biggest hit superhero action movie. Based on the Marvel Comics series, 'The Avengers' stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

The Calcutta scene was shot in New Mexico. According to the Associated Press, the film is already is a marvel at the worldwide box office. Final figures from distributor Disney on April 30 put the overseas haul for 'The Avengers' at $185.1 million since it began opening in 39 markets last week. That's nearly $7 million more than the studio had estimated on April 29.

In a recent interview, producer Jeremy Latchman said he and director Joss Whedon wanted a hideout for physicist Bruce Banner, the alter ego of the green monster Hulk, and initially thought of a leper colony. But they ended up shooting the sequence in a New Mexico slum.

What is it that draws Hollywood to Indian poverty? Filmmakers such as Ryan Murphy (Eat Pray Love), John Madden (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and Roland Joffé (City of Joy) have been both felicitated and criticized for showing India as a spiritual destination and selling its poverty to ill informed Western audiences.

Despite its negative portrayal in films, India remains an emerging market for foreign studios looking to distribute their films to its billion plus target audience. According to a report in the Business Standard, Avengers, distributed by UTV Motion Pictures hit 800 Indian screens. It was also dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu - even wider than Avatar, till now the biggest Hollywood blockbuster here.

A wave of big budget Hollywood films is slated to hit the Indian screens this summer. Sony Pictures' Amazing Spider Man, that has Irrfan playing a role, is expected to see an even wider release in India with 1,000 prints, according to the BS report.

Then there are Men in Black 3, Madagascar 3, Dark Knight Rises, Ice Age:

Continental Drift, Rock of Ages and GI Joe 2 lined up throughout the busy summer. The film's other India connect is the theme song 'Hello Andheron' by the band Agnee.

Jonas Brothers Part Ways With Disney's Hollywood Records (Exclusive)

After six years with the label, the siblings reclaimed their masters and are now free agents.

The Jonas Brothers have parted ways with Hollywood Records after releasing three albums on the Disney-owned label.
The sibling trio of Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas, which has sold 17 million albums worldwide, also bought back the rights to their master recordings, merchandising and publishing for an undisclosed sum.

“This was a decision that we made as a group,” Nick Jonas tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Naturally, as with any partnership, when you do part ways, there is emotion tied to it. We've been blessed to have a lot of success with Hollywood and with Disney, but speaking on behalf of my brothers and our team, we're all looking forward to this next chapter. We're ready for that next step as a group, and being able to take our work with us was so important.”

When contacted by THR, a Hollywood spokesperson commented: “Hollywood Records and Jonas Brothers have amicably ended an amazingly successful partnership after six years. … We couldn’t have asked for better partners or nicer people to work with. We wish Nick, Kevin and Joe all the best in their future endeavors.”

VIDEO: Why Joe Jonas Just Might Be Latino

It’s a rarity these days for a band with Jonas-level success -- the kind that includes sold-out arena shows, world tours, platinum albums, movie and TV specials -- to successfully reclaim their catalog (for a hefty price, typically a percentage based on past sales and estimated future earnings). But to hear manager Johnny Wright tell it, the opportunity couldn’t be passed up. “We could stay, or we could go,” he says of the negotiation, which came after the band had met its obligations to the label. “This will allow them to chart their own destiny.”

“The industry and distribution channels are changing so rapidly, we don’t even know what it means anymore to put out a record." — Jonas Brothers manager Johnny Wright

It also will allow the band to look at additional ancillary income from digital initiatives such as apps and live concert streaming, technologies that barely existed when the web-savvy JoBros signed with Hollywood in 2007 (with masters that they had wrested from Columbia Records after the Sony label dropped them). And then there’s the most lucrative stream of all: publishing, which can take the form of valuable synchs and movie placements, foreign territories, sheet music -- you name it.

“The industry and distribution channels are changing so rapidly, we don’t even know what it means anymore to put out a record,” says Wright. “If we wanted to take another deal with a major, it would be a different than what we entered into when we signed with Hollywood. We don't have to become just an artist to the label, we could be a partner or do it ourselves and then come back later on. There’s no plan here -- the plan is whatever we decide to make it.”

Q&A: Manager Johnny Wright Sounds Off On The State Of The Music Industry

Wright readily admits Jonas Brothers had outgrown Disney, something that became evident as they contemplated their exit. “In having a conversation about moving forward, we knew we weren’t going to do a Jonas show on Disney Channel and the likelihood of us doing movie in that vein was not there, so the big platforms were not really accessible to us anymore,” says the veteran manager, who has represented Justin Timberlake since his 'N Sync days.

Besides, the guys longed to take some time with a new album (their most recent, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, came out in 2009) without the pressure of a deadline. “We don't have to have a record out under any time constraints, so they’re free to just create and explore and do it at their own pace,” says Wright. “And they're enjoying it.”

Indeed, adds Nick Jonas: “In these past three years, my brothers and I have not released a record, but we've really come into our own as men. And we've also lived life, which is an important part to making a record. … I've got a studio set up in my apartment in New York where we can all put down our ideas. It's a really liberating feeling to just be able to create and write whatever is on our hearts.”

STORY: One Direction, The Wanted and Big Time Rush: Breaking Down the Boy Band Renaissance

Wright says to expect a new Jonas Brothers album by the end of 2012 or early 2013. In the meantime, the guys are putting into motion their own plan for imaging, even introducing a new logo (see right). But in turning from “boys to men, to use that clichĂ©,” he adds that this is a band that hasn’t yet peaked worldwide. And with all that they do both as a group and individually -- their side projects include the E! reality show Married to Jonas starring Kevin Jonas and new wife Danielle Deleasa (a co-production of Jonas Enterprises and Ryan Seacrest Productions), Nick’s roles in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and NBC’s Smash, a new feature film for Joe and plans to sign acts to launch their own production or publishing company -- there’s no telling where the Jonas train will lead them. But one thing is for sure: They’re driving it.

“What the Jonas Brothers have already done in the music business, most people will never get to,” says Wright. “Now it's chapter two, where they take those experiences and lessons and music and have all the control in putting it together and making a great business plan moving forward.”

Manipal students to attend SAE event in US

Mangalore, May 1:

Students of Manipal Institute of Technology will take part in SAE’s (Society of Automotive Engineers) off-road competition in the US.

All-terrain vehicle

Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor of Manipal University, launched Team Manipal Racing’s (TMR) all-terrain vehicle in Manipal on Monday. The team comprises 36 students of Manipal Institute of Technology.

The team will participate in the SAE’s off-road competition at Wisconsin in the US from June 7 to 10.

Knowledge, skills

Quoting Mr Siddharth Singh, team leader and third-year student studying in Mechanical Department, a press release said that the event will be a perfect platform to apply engineering knowledge and skills in a real world environment.

“We hope to do better this time with a lot of improvement in our all-terrain vehicle,” he said.

This is the third time that the institute students will be participating in SAE event.

Preparations for this year’s race began in 2010 after the team decided to skip the 2011 event at Illinois in the US.

That time was utilised to develop the design and come up with a better vehicle. The final design was completed by mid-2011 and the fabrication began in October, it said.

The release said that the vehicle has been extensively tested and found to be better in many ways than the previous ones. This year’s competition will see the participation of 115 teams from all over the world, it said.
